Porsche Design is writing a new chapter in the history of watchmaking and marking another milestone. Following more than 40 years of successful collaboration with renowned watchmakers, the luxury brand presents the Porsche Design Timepiece No. 1 and Porsche Design Chronograph Titanium Limited Edition models.
These two automatic chronographs mark the beginning of the era Timepieces made by Porsche Design. The watches, which are the first to be developed completely in-house, are designed on the basis of the same principles used by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche for the very first Porsche Design watch – the legendary Chronograph I: optimal readability, technical perfection, the highest quality materials and an absolute focus on functionality. Each of the new watch models is limited to 500 units only.
On 20th November, I was honored to be invited to the launch of Porsche Design limited edition timepieces and to learn about the whole story, the value and the history behind these precious watches.
With its first watch in 1972, Porsche Design introduced a style-defining classic: It was not a watch in the traditional sense, made from gold or silver. Rather, it was a revolutionary time measurement instrument designed entirely in matt black. The first watches to be developed completely in-house build on this tradition and continue the legacy of the Chronograph I with their non-compromising design. They are innovative precision tools, optimized in terms of case size and their finely crafted surfaces, as well as in terms of ease of use and wearer comfort. Porsche Design has taken advantage of the technical possibilities offered by the new millennium in implementing these new features, delighting both engineers and lovers of design alike.
Functionality and aesthetics were equal partners in the mind of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, with neither taking priority over the other, and this conviction held by the founder set a trend that applies to this day. Nothing is there just for decoration: The impressively defined shapes are derived from the functionality and made from carefully selected, authentic materials that are assembled with the highly skilled workmanship. The aesthetics of the Timepiece No. 1 and Chronograph Titanium's dials further reflect this purism. The hands and bar indices are filled with white luminescent material so that the large dial is as clear as possible at all times. The white lettering also contrasts with the black instrument dial. The date is displayed level with the “3“.
The two automatic chronographs have been developed entirely by Porsche Design Timepieces AG, based in Solothurn (Switzerland), and have also been manufactured in Switzerland. Both timepieces feature cases made from titanium, with a diameter of 42 millimeters. The black case of the Timepiece No. 1 is not painted, but is instead coated using a special procedure to make the matt black finish even more durable. With regard to technical features, both models are equipped with a mechanical Valjoux 7750 chronograph mechanism that has a power reserve of 48 hours. The blackened sapphire crystal case back that shows the inner workings of the exclusive, energy-optimised Porsche Design rotor is a real eye-catcher. The Porsche Design Timepiece No. 1 with black rubber strap and the Chronograph Titanium Limited Edition with black calf leather strap are waterproof down to a depth of 50 metres (5 ATM) and are each limited to just 500 units.
